Hi. I’m Joseph White. I’ve been hiking the Alps of Switzerland since 1985, and have been organizing and leading Boy Scout hiking trips to Switzerland and to various part of the U.S. for much of the past decade. (The biggest project to date: 26 Scouts and parents to Kandersteg, Switzerland, in July 2006.)
I founded MyHikingVacations, with my son Harry and hiking expert Will Donnell, because the hiking experience is so wonderful that we wanted to share it with others. There’s nothing like standing in front of the Fruenden Glacier, looking down more than 1,000 metres to the waters of the Oeschinensee as the sunset turns the sky into a kaleidoscope of pinks, blues and reds. The belly is full of wonderful pasta from the dinner you had at the nearby hut, a grateful reward at the end of the challenging 4-hour hike up the side the mountain.
Yes, Switzerland is a great place for a hike. And for a vacation. The scenery is spectacular. The crime rate is low. The trains actually run on time.
I am a trained outdoorsman, having honed my outdoor survival and leadership skills during my years with the Scouts. I am also trained in First Aid and CPR. We have carefully selected the hikes for your vacation from among our many favorites, hikes that are challenging but offer great views and the satisfaction of accomplishment. We know the region. We know the weather. We know how to pace a hike so that everyone isn’t exhausted before the first rest stop. We are limiting the number of hikers to 14 because we know the importance of maintaining camaraderie when tackling the great outdoors as a group.
After years organizing and leading hikes, friends kept saying “Why don’t you do this for a living?” Well, that's exactly what we're doing. That’s why we’d love to have you along for our 2011 MyHikingVacations tour, July 12-22, 2011 in Kandersteg and Grindelwald, Switzerland.
